Diamond Gothic Summer Lovin' - Read My Thoughts on 'Theabell' & Find Out Who I think Shoots Annabell Mason

Set in 1929 Savannah, Georgia, Diamond Gothic satisfies all the desires I have for a novel! Replete with suspense, romance, character development, and peppered with sharp 20s dialogue, Diamond Gothic has become one of this summer’s best reads!

This trio of authoresses has intrigued and charmed many, offering everything that’s right for those of us who had no idea we could enjoy a genteel 1920s murder mystery with a side dish of wit.

What I love the most is that beyond offering an enthralling whodunit, these ladies have painted a fascinating portrait of human nature and relationship. For instance:

ANNABELL & THEODORE

Annabell Mason is a young woman a part of the upper crust wealthy and privileged. Nevertheless, Annabell our stubborn protagonists possess a certain sassiness about her that gives way to a romance with a young man whose family has unfortunately gone from riches to rags.

Theodore Wentworth, a childhood friend who has grown up to be quite the stunner, becomes the center of much of Annabell’s attention. Eventually, their innocent flirtations escalate and the couple finds themselves seeking a safe haven to be with one another and away from all those who would condemn their love.

“Run away from here and never come back,” Theodore smiled.
“What in the world are you suggesting, Mr. Wentworth, and what kind of girl do you take me for?” Annabell eyebrowed her statement with feigned disgust.
“Hesh up, ” Theodore smiled.
And he kissed her again. Another deep, long, just-out-of teenhood-spirited kiss. A kiss with all the youth and excitement of adolescence, but with the knowledge of adults (and of all those working parts in the proper places). It was a good time to be Theodore and Annabell. It was a good time for kissing.
Chapter 15 UNHINGED

Their love is so sweet, and so painfully underdeveloped I hope in future chapters we have an opportunity to see these two explore the joys of young love. Nevertheless, the ladies adroitly shed light to issues of socioeconomic disparity in depicting the relationship between Annabell and Theodore, as well as the Masons and the Help. Inasmuch, the detailed picture of life in the 1920s reminds us how different the times were....

But of course as much as I love Theabell (sorry – I had to) their romance seems to be marred by an impending death that seeks to tear our lovers apart – which prompts me to wonder…

WHO SHOOTS ANNABELL MASON-HAYWORTH?

(Please read with caution – possible spoilers ahead)

Based on pure speculation – my guess is not the more obvious choice, the envious Eve ‘Harling’ Hayworth - but her brother, Mr. We-Haven’t-Met-Him-Yet Hayworth – otherwise cryptically introduced to us as Annabell’s husband in the first chapter!

But let me tell you why: Chapter 1 - 1929 & BLEEDING reveals that Annabell Mason marries a Hayworth and assumes his last name. Which begs the question - why isn’t she a Wentworth as the burgeoning summer romance between her and Theodore Wentworth would clearly suggest?

Well there are two BIG reasons for that.

1. In Chapter 12 - PRODIGAL SON, Abigail Spencer sheds a little color on Walter Senior’s strong ties to the Hayworth’s. Though not by blood, and I repeat not by blood, Walter becomes a part of the Hayworth family fabric with Edgar John Hayworth becoming something of a brother to him. Edgar, father to a devious Eve Hayworth and a son (whom we haven’t been formally introduced to), ultimately dies in a tragic fire.

This is especially important to remember because, “Walter had always been looking for ways to pay back the debt to the Hayworth family, without whom, he would be nothing”.

In Chapter 9 - DADDY, Walter informs Annabell that there’s something wrong with his memory and that it would soon all fade in the recesses of his mind. Inasmuch, he strongly urges Annabell to quickly find a husband with whom she can share her father’s inheritance with. And now, what better way to repay a debt - than to urge your daughter to marry a Hayworth son who would inherit all your wealth?

It is my understanding that in a future chapter, Annabell obeys her father wish and without much say in the matter, marries into the Hayworth family...

'Theabell' have so much promise!
2. Which brings me to my second point, I’m sure Annabell will suggest that she marry Theodore, but her father will deny their love and force her to marry a Hayworth. Theodore, whose family wealth was lost as a direct result of his troublesome brother, has no chance to marry Annabell. Despite whatever fervent love they may share, Theodore is an inferior – nothing more than an employee to the Masons, just one of the Help.

As a result, Annabell may continue her impassioned romance with Theodore behind closed doors – despite her parent’s wishes. And even as she marries a Hayworth – it is my strong belief that “the doting bride, demure and gracious, innocent” will eventually be found out. And unfortunately, infidelity can drive people to commit the most unspeakable acts...including murder.

Jason Wentworth (bottom-left) & Eve Harling (bottom-right)
Diamond Gothic is full of red herrings and vibrant characters. It just upsets me that the refreshing romance between Annabell and Theodore is marred by the protagonist’s imminent death. Nevertheless, this rotating novel is thoroughly addictive with the right light touch and plenty of plot.

Seriously, when will this be available in paperback?

Stay tuned – later this week I admire the glitz & glamour of the 1920s and see as I try to decipher the supernatural undertone present in Diamond Gothic – what does it all mean?

Fashion Spotlight: Bethany Joy Lenz is Romantic Gothic on “Middle of Nowhere” Red Carpet

Bethany Joy Lenz & Model in a similar look
from the Fall 2011 Of Two Minds Fashion Show
On the Wednesday, June 20th premiere of Sharon Lawrence's indie film, “Middle of Nowhere” - a very sexy Bethany Joy Lenz stepped out looking more beautiful than we’ve ever seen!

Our elegantly edgy babe wore a black Of Two Minds cap-sleeve minidress featuring a plunging V-neckline and sheer lace panels that accentuate her waistline and expose a modest amount of skin. This gothic dress is a little darker than one would expect on a hot summer day but the relaxed fit and flirty lace really flatters her extra-petite frame and leaves it perfectly poised for the hot L.A. weather!

Bethany Joy Lenz's Ombre Hair
Although I’m not a fan of the full skirt with a handkerchief hemline (it reminds me of Morticia from The Adams Family - I'm sorry, but it does!) -the cut of the hem does manage to keep up with the rhythm of our vibrant and feminine, free-spirit as she struts down the red carpet.

Joy complements this desirable dark style with gold earrings and bracelets from Robindira Unsworth, nude heels from Stuart Weitzman and a black clutch from Feragamo.

To finish the look off our starry-eyed diva showcases her seductive tousled waves and her ombre look. I adore, adore, adore how her dark roots fade into a sun-kissed honey hue at the end and how her longer hair exudes youth!

Ms. Joy Lenz you are a rare breed – the exception to the rule – you really do seem to get younger and more radiant with each day.

The Verdict: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Bracelets from Robindira Unsworth
& black clutch from Feragamo
Nude heels from Stuart Weitzman
(One thing – I would love to see Joy in more diverse colors, and patterns. She’s been doing a lot of black lately – I need more pop like her fuchsia strapless maxi dress from earlier this year.)

Diamond Gothic: Summer Blog Lovin'

I've always had a strong dislike towards the word 'hiatus'. Such cruelty and torture for the impatient, much like myself.

And of course, the Diamond Gothic authoresses have decided to take a mini-summer hiatus - abandoning readers at the edges of their seats with a million and one questions left unanswered.

Well, for those of us who have been addicted it's horrible news - HOWEVER, for those of you who haven't been keeping up, NOW is the time to catch up with all the mystery, dark secrets and romance of the south! Trust me, you'll thank yourself!

Expect some Diamond Gothic lovin' to help cope with the hiatus, stay tuned!

"One fateful night, a southern general had brought his mistress down to share a drink with his men. She had waltzed in wearing her powder-blue hoop skirt and perfectly matched corset. Her skin appeared to glow as her curls carefully kissed the side of her neck down to her bosom. Her beady eyes were a piercing shade of blue, with a small speck of red in each eye. She wore jewelry much like that of a gypsy.

The gentlemen enjoyed the company of this misses, for they had been at war for quite some time. She sat quietly listening to them swap war horror stories, sharing a bottle of brandy. Each man proudly boasted about the many lifeless bodies for which he was responsible– until suddenly, the breathing of the men began to slow. Their eyes widened, and as each one grasped for air, it was clear... Poison. This magnetic –yet mysterious– gypsy, who had never taken a sip, took a liquid spell to all in her path. As the general’s hand reached up for one last cry for mercy, she knelt down by his side and removed her Diamond Gothic pendant, laying it upon his chest."

News Update: Bethany Joy Lenz in CATS for Cats!

(Trust me, I was just as confused by the news that Joy will be in a CATS celebrity charity event considering her confusion over the appeal of the furry feline centered musical on Twitter.)

But of course our beautiful philanthropist's generosity does not discriminate and knows no bounds! Joy will be leveraging her talent along with Owain Yeoman (THE MENTALIST), Janel Parrish (PRETTY LITTLE LIARS) and the So You Think You Can Dance dancers for this exclusive Broadway-inspired celeb concert benefiting the Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats, a nonprofit that "works to provide all cats humane and happy lives".

The star-studded purrrrformance is one-night only and is set for Saturday, July 14 at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, CA.

The Orpheum Theater
As random as this event may seem, I'm excited to see Joy in a quasimusical! Oh and did I mention there's a celeb VIP after-party...?

Poem Update: "_____ Down, ______ To Go"

It's true what they say - heartbreak is like fuel for creativity. Singer-songwriters Adele, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga have all said that heartbreak drove them to write some of their biggest hits to date. So how does Joy fall into all this?

Well she's been sharing insanely good poems that travel to a darker side of her emotions. There's an unmissable sense of urgency and distress that make her words ever so poignant and raw. Yet no matter how dark the feel of her poetry may be, what I love most is that her strength, good faith and her willingness to go on seem to be the overarching message.

I really hope she continues her creative flow - it seems to be a catharsis for her and more selfishly, entertainment for us.

If you haven't already, check out Joy's latest poem below:

"_____ Down, ______ To Go"

Very raw emotions
Everything I feel consumes
It’s true the Lord is close to the brokenhearted.

I am fully open,
Yet thoroughly suspicious
I’m so grateful and so very devastated.

The sun rises and sets
Everyone in their own hell
It’s amazing our capacity to survive.

News Update: Bethany Joy Lenz's Emmy Submission

The first order of business today is Bethany Joy Lenz's submission and possible (yet improbable) nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award!

Joy's name appears on the nominations ballot in a bidding to acknowledge her work as Haley James Scott on the ninth and final season of One Tree Hill as an Outstanding Supporting Actress. I'm not entirely certain why she falls under the category of Supporting Actress where competition is robust (she has a 1 in 141 chance of simply being nominated) -  but I fully understand why Joy, of all her nine seasons portraying Haley would chose this season to submit herself.

The odds are certainly against her - and not because of merit, less because of the competition and more because of the rampant discrimination against anything associated with the CW, a broadcast network known for producing cheap programming and junk food entertainment. And if that wasn't enough, One Tree Hill isn't exactly a critical darling and pretty much propagates the inbred prejudice against every CW show and its associated actors....strike two.

Nevertheless, anyone who's watched One Tree Hill knows Joy was consistently the show's MVP. Joy may have been underused in prior seasons, but she really stepped up to the plate and acted the hell out a nuanced storyline regarding Nathan's kidnapping in season nine.

If you can't remember why Joy at the very least deserves an emmy nod here's a previous post I've written to acknowledge one of the most heart rendering episodes in the history of the show:

A breath-taking montage worth watching more than once.
Therefore, the question isn't whether Joy has the talent to be in contention for Outstanding Supporting Actress - it becomes whether or not television critics and the academy can put aside their prejudices to give recognition to a powerful actress.

A good actress is a good actress - and whether Joy is or isn't nominated it doesn't detract from the fact that she's established herself as a bona fide actress on a crappy network.

Nevertheless, I wish her all the luck in the world!

Just be there where it hurtslongsheals.
It will teach you how to cope (and how to feel)

Silent Sun. Stillness thick.
Water mixed with air in my absence brings false sense of security.
Hope of birds. Briefly.
